Dear Island Neighbors,
The filing period has now closed for Ward 1 Town Council candidates, and I’m one of the two people who have filed. It’s always good to have multiple candidates for office – hopefully, that will produce some lively debate about priorities for our community’s future.
Why I’m Running to Represent Ward 1 Again
In my first four years on Town Council, I’ve listened to you, I’ve learned quickly, I’ve worked hard, and I hope you agree that I’ve represented you well. The very high percentage of the vote you gave me in 2020 tells me that we’ve been focused on the right issues, and that you respect my ability to represent you well. We’ve accomplished a lot in my first term, but there’s much more to be done for the benefit of all our citizens. In Ward 1, this includes young families, retirees, Gullah neighbors, new citizens, the island workforce, and small business owners. So I’m running to continue my work on behalf of Ward 1 and our Island community.
Unfinished Business
The big, complex issues that will need capable leadership in the next four years include:
- Finalizing resolution of the outstanding Gateway Corridor issues
- Planning intelligently for Island districts, especially Ward 1
- Supporting our essential workforce with housing and transportation
- Investing in drainage and traffic controls to protect your homes and neighborhoods
- Ensuring accountability and transparency in Town government spending
Experience Counts
I’ve gained valuable experience over the past twelve years – first as a community advocate, then Planning and Vision Steering Commission member, and now as the Ward 1 Town council representative. That experience has enabled me to build consensus on Town Council and forge relationships with our County and State partners. It has also allowed the Council to entrust me in several roles to better our community:
- Finance and Administration Chair
- Gullah Geechee Community Development Corporation Board
- Island Rec Board,
- and the Northpoint Advisory Committee.
And I’ve kept my promises to Ward 1, while maintaining a balanced budget and significantly increasing our financial reserves to ensure we are prepared for any disaster.
Maintaining High Standards
Please understand that I will continue to operate with the highest standards. That’s very important to me – it’s the way I was raised as a native islander here on Hilton Head Island, and I know it’s important to you too.
My focus during this campaign will be on keeping you informed and doing the best job I can for Ward 1 residents and Hilton Head Island. Candidates who are lacking in substantive ideas, vision, experience, and knowledge sometimes resort to making deceptive statements and claims. Be aware that my opponent and his proxies are already engaging in this.
Do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or clarification you might need. I return every email and phone call. I am confident that more informed voters make everything better for our beautiful island home, and I’m grateful for your support and for your love of this community.
Alex
