2025 – A New Year with New Opportunities

Dear Island Neighbors,

Happy New Year! This is my first communication to you in 2025. As always, I’m optimistic that we in Town government will represent you well in the new year. As your Ward 1 Town Council representative, I will continue to effectively listen, learn, and act on your behalf as we face our opportunities to protect and enhance Hilton Head Island’s vitality as a community.

2024 Election

I am grateful that you chose to reelect me for another four-year term on Town Council in November. You honored me with 68% of the vote – that indicates a strong mandate of support that re-confirms my positions on our community’s major issues. My Town Council colleagues then elected me as Mayor Pro-Tem in December. I appreciate their trust – that will help to build consensus and momentum for our important work on Council.

Town Council Planning Session

The public is welcome at our upcoming Council planning session on February 5th and 6th at the Westin Hotel, and I hope you will attend. The first day will focus on how we can maximize our efficiency in our Town governance and processes. The second day will focus on the update of our Strategic Plan and the next action steps. The current Plan was adopted in June of 2023; to see that plan and its top 15 strategies, click on this link:

Hilton Head Island Town Council Adopts New Strategic Action Plan

Highway 278 Gateway Corridor and Bridge

Here’s a quick update on this critically important project. Town Council provided its municipal consent to the SC Department of Transportation last year. That allowed the project to move to the next level of engineering, cost estimating, and funding. A lot of work remains on all those fronts. We are currently working with Beaufort County and State and Federal sources to secure the funding that was jeopardized by the failure of a County sales tax referendum in November. The State Infrastructure Bank has set a deadline to demonstrate that the necessary funding will be available. Our urgent discussions with the County are ongoing, and they will continue as the new County Council Chair, Alice Howard, assumes that office. Town Council will hold a workshop on January 9 at 1pm to discuss next steps. Please see the agenda here.

Thank You!

I sincerely thank you all for your support for our town’s work, and also for me personally. You make all the time and effort worthwhile! As always, please be in touch with your comments, concerns, and questions. My prayers are with you and your families as we look forward to a fulfilling New Year for Hilton Head Island.
